The calm before the storm

The atmosphere in Maseru is absolutely charged with excitement on the morning of the 50th anniversary of the ‘Mother of Hard Enduros.’ Chatting to some off-road legends like Alfie Cox, Louwrens Mahoney, Brian Capper and a couple of the podium prospects, Wade Young and Mario Roman, you feel the pre-race tension. The weather may just hold the key to this event. Heavy snowfalls on Bushmen’s Pass overnight may just play into the hands of the European riders. The ‘MOTHER’ has just become even harder!

The pre-race press conference gave one a glimpse of the huge sea of uncertainty that washes over competitors at all levels. There are so many variables, the weather being just one of them, that you cannot but feel that luck, or call it providence if you will, will play a major role in the outcome. The rider that, on the day, has that magic ‘perfect storm’, may be the one who takes the top step on the podium. The stage is set, the pieces are in place, and, as with the gladiators of old, may the games begin! One thing is certain, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
