Sherco South Africa are taking part in the epic ‘Roof of Africa’ for the third time this year but this is the first year, since the launch of the brand in mid 2015, that they have such a formidable team to do battle. Looking back at their performances in 2017, we think they are a very strong contender to win at least one of the events. With 2 Sherco riders ranked in the top 3 of the World Hard Enduro Series, you just can’t expect otherwise.
The Liqui Moly Sherco team, as it is known this year, includes none other than the South African favourite Wade Young, who missed the 2016 Roof of Africa race after a huge crash at the Sea to Sky last year.
Wade’s performances during the earlier part of this year made him favourite to be World Champion but unfortunately, he picked up an injury at the Romaniacs event, causing him to miss a few races. Since his signing 2 years ago, Wade has won several international races and has featured on the podium in almost every other race. His most recent win was at the Wildwood Rock Extreme race, in Australia.
You will remember that Wade has a fantastic record in the Roof of Africa, being the youngest winner in 2012; a second time winner in 2014 and a second place finisher in 2015. Wade is an experienced Roof of Africa contender and is South Africa’s best chance of winning the event in 2017. With all of South Africa behind him we are confident he will go 100% for the win.
Mario Roman from Spain, World Junior Trials Champion, joined Sherco at the end of 2016. Mario is the world’s highest ranked extreme enduro rider at the moment, leading the World Extreme Enduro Championship in 2017 with only the ‘Roof’ to go. This will be Mario’s first attempt in the Roof of Africa and his consistency and skill, picked up as a world trials champion, definitely makes him one of the favourites to win the 2017 ‘Roof’
I am sure that both these riders will take on the likes of Jarvis and Gomez with a vengeance, which will surely provide huge excitement to all spectators and fans of the sport .
All the way from the USA, Mitch Carvolth, with top ranking in the USA Extreme Enduro, will be attempting his first Roof of Africa on a Sherco. Mitch is well known in the Extreme Enduro scene and has taken part in the Erzberg, Romaniacs and finished 8th in the TKO, which was held in Tennessee, USA this year. He also finished in 3rd place at the King of the Motos 2017. He may well be the “dark horse outsider” that some people have suggested and finish in the top 10 this year.
The former South African, Wayne Dickert, who now hails from the USA and is trained and managed by Mitch Carvolth will be in the Silver Class at the ‘Roof’. Wayne knows African conditions very well, so his attempt should be faultless and we think he might surprise the other contenders in Silver. Wayne will be joined in the Sherco Silver team by Matt van Niekerk, who hails from East London.
The ‘Roof’ excitement is building – we can’t wait!
